From Bedtime Fears to a Good Night’s Sleep
At Home Of The Wise, some of our best ideas come from the heart—and from our kids. One night, when my daughter Finlee was just four years old, she was having a really hard time going to bed in her room all alone. When I asked her what what making her afraid, she said “There are monsters in my closet.”
We had tried everything— showing her the empty closet, night lights, lullabies, cuddles, pep talks—but her fear was persistent. Bedtime was turning into a battle, and as a mom, all I wanted was for her to feel safe, comforted, and able to get the rest she needed.
That’s when a memory came back to me. Years ago, when her older brother was terrified of the Grinch (thank you Jim Carey’s version), we had made a “Grinch-Be-Gone Spray” as a way to ease his fears. I thought, why not try something similar for Finlee?
Together, we created what would become our beloved Go-Away-Monster-Spray. Using essential oils from my own collection that support relaxation and sleep—like lavender, cedarwood, and frankincense—we combined them with a bit of Epsom salt and water in a small glass spray bottle. At bedtime, we’d spritz the room, especially near the closet, and let the comforting scent work its magic.
Finlee loved it. It wasn’t just about the calming aroma; it was the sense of control it gave her, the act of taking action, and the belief that she had a way to keep the monsters out. Nighttime became easier. The oils helped to make her sleepy. And most importantly, she felt safe.
That act of Mom desperation turned into something more:
🌙 A children’s book, written to help other families navigate nighttime fears
🌙 Spray bottles, modeled after the original one Finlee and I created together
Meet the Book: Go-Away-Monster-Spray
This playful and reassuring bedtime story is perfect for little ones who are afraid of the dark, nervous about bedtime, or just need a little extra comfort at night. The book also includes coloring pages and a space to name your child’s own “monster,” encouraging creativity, emotional expression, and making the monsters silly rather than scary.
It’s more than a story—it’s a tool for connection, comfort, and better sleep.
